10 Best Valle De Guadalupe Wineries To Try This Year

If you are looking for a fun wine-tasting day trip from San Diego and don’t feel like going to Temecula, how about a trip South of the Border? The Valle de Guadalupe wineries are fantastic, the food is delectable, and the winemakers in the Guadalupe Valley know their craft. About 1 h 15 minutes south of Tijuana, is easier to get to than you think.

My husband and I love going wine tasting in Valle de Guadelupe and have done so several times in the past, sometimes for a quick weekend getaway, sometimes just for the day. It is always a fun time and we can’t wait to go back soon. In the meantime, I want to share some of our favorite wineries, as well as some tips on where to eat, how to get to Valle and more. I hope you find it helpful.

Valle de Guadalupe Wine Quick History

The Valle de Guadalupe wine region has been producing wine since the mid 1830s, when Missionary and priest Felix Caballero started the first mission in the area and planted the first vines. Unfortunately, the mission failed soon after and the land was then occupied by Russian refugees, who used the grapes mainly for brandy production.

In the 1990s, wine making really took off and Valle de Guadalupe slowly became the fantastic wine region and destination for wine lovers it is today. Did you know that 90% of all wine produced in Mexico is produced in Valle de Guadalupe?

Where to Stay in Valle de Guadalupe?

The best way to explore and enjoy Valle de Guadelupe is if you spend at least a night or two. You will find accommodation for any budget, from glamping to high end luxury, boutique hotels and B&Bs right in the vineyards.

Monte Xanic’s tasting room is outside on a wood deck overlooking a pond. It doesn’t get more idyllic than that. The wine tasting includes a tour of the cellars and 4 wines for 28$ (see website for current prices).

I personally fell in love with their rosé – light and fruity, but not overly sweet, this was perfect for sipping on a hot summer day. Their wines are really fantastic and it shows. They were just nominated for “Best New World Winery of the Year” by WineEnthusiast Magazine. So grab a bottle of wine, kick back, and relax. This place makes it easy to be in the moment!

This boutique winery focuses on quality, sustainability (all wines are organic!), and innovation. The winemaker Phil Gregory uses new techniques combined with old world methods to create balanced and tasty wines.

Casa Frida is moe than just a winery. It is an event space that has something for everyone, from intimate private tasting rooms, an oyster bar overlooking the pond, a cocktail rooftop bar that invites for dancing, and 2 fantastic restaurants. This place also makes their own Tequila, so if you want, you can do a tequila tasting here as well.

Please note that reservations (and deposits) are necessary for reserving a private tasting room, especially on weekends and during peak season (summer). Wine tasting usually consists of 4 wines, but various packages are available for groups.

From Brandy to Wine, this place has a long history of dealing with grapes. The brandy distillery started in 1948, but expanded into wine 21 years later, making it one of the oldest wineries in Guadalupe Valley.

Wine tasting includes a tour of their museum and the wine cellars. If this is your first time in Valle de Guadalupe, I highly recommend you visit here. We chose the “big” tasting, which included 8 wines. My favorite was the Nebbiolo, but to be honest, I wouldn’t mind a bottle or two of each in my house. They have some of my favorite wines in the valley.

Adobe Guadalupe Winery

Sometimes the ashes of tragedy, as devastating as they can be, can also inspire to bring joy back into this world. This is the story of Adobe Guadalupe Winery. Owner Tru Miller lost her son Arlo and a series of coincidences led her and her husband Don to Valle de Guadalupe and open this winery and event space. You can feel the heart and the spirit that the Millers poured into this place.

This cozy hacienda style tasting room looks nothing short of a movie set – absolutely stunning. Even if you just drove over the border that morning, you will feel like you are a million miles away from the stress and bustle of everyday life. The winery offers fun getaways that include horseback riding, fine dining, and of course spending the night at the winery.

The wines at Adobe have won several awards and ranks among the top 1-2% of wines according to Vivino.

Villa Montefiory

Wine making was put in the cradle of Paolo Paoloni, the owner of Villa Montefiory. He was born into an Italian wine maker family and grew up tending the vineyards with his family. After earning his PhD in Agronomy, specializing in Oenology, Paolo moved to Mexico and started Villa Montefiory in 1997.

The view from the Tasting room is mesmerizing and you can just sit and sip for hours. The majority of wines are from Italian grape varieties, such as Montepulciano, Nero d’Avolo, and Sangiovese and what can I say, the deep reds of Italy seem to have found perfect growing conditions in the Guadalupe Valley. Or as the the wine maker himself says: “Mexican Wines with and Italian Heart!”

This winery & restaurant has such a cozy atmosphere. You sit in the courtyard under sprawling branches of oak trees, nibble on a cheese board (or something more substantial) and forget about the world for a little while (or a little longer, if you stay at their vacation rental).

Try their 100% Monastrell, more commonly known as Mourvèdre. This bold, smoky red with hints of pepper and tobacco, deep blackberry and tannins that will suck your mouth dry is perfect with some barbacoa tacos.

Cieli

Cieli not only has some of the most stunning views over Valle de Guadalupe, but this is also the place to go if your group includes wine and beer lovers. Yes, that is right, Cieli makes not just a fantastic array of wines, but also some tasty Craft Beer. The selection spans from Blondes to IPAs, Ambers and Stouts, while the wines honor the family’s Tuscan roots.

No matter what beverage you choose, I am certain you will enjoy. The view from the rustic porch during late afternoon, as the sun was setting over the valley were fantastic. We also enjoyed live music and there might even have been some dancing.

L.A. Cetto

L.A. Cetto is the big one in the Valley. With over 700 awards, medals, and recognitions for their wines, and almost 100 years of wine-making history, L.A. Cetto is one of the most established wineries in Valle de Guadalupe.

The winery offers several tastings for every price point as well as the Angelo Cetto Experience, which includes a tour of the cellars, private wine tasting of 8 wines in a VIP room, and a souvenir.

Bruma

This eco-wine resort is a must on your Valle de Guadalupe wine tasting tour. The property is absolutely stunning the water feature showcasing the medusa-like bare branches of an enormous oak tree will keep your eyes mesmerized as you sip the fantastic wines.

The winery also features a restaurant (Fauna) and stunning accommodation.
